New type of auto-rooting Android adware is nearly impossible to remove

Dikutip dari Ars Technica:

The researchers have found more than 20,000 samples of trojanized apps that repackage the code or other features found in official apps available in Google Play and then are posted to third-party markets. From the end user’s perspective, the modified apps look just like the legitimate apps, and in many cases they provide the same functionality and experience. Behind the scenes, however, the apps use powerful exploits that gain root access to the Android operating system. The exploits—found in three app families known as Shedun, Shuanet, and ShiftyBug—allow the trojanized apps to install themselves as system applications, a highly privileged status that’s usually reserved only for operating system-level processes.

Ahem… “Don’t bother with anti-virus

Antivirus is dead

Mengenai pernyataan Brian Dye (Senior VP Symantec) soal antivirus baru-baru ini (“era antivirus sudah tamat“), ini tanggapan Alan Solomon melalui blognya:

I stopped using an antivirus a long time ago, because I couldn’t see how it could work in a world where you would need daily updates,…

Instead, I switched to Linux. There doesn’t seem to be much malware for Linux. I don’t know why. Some say it’s because Linux’s security is better, some say it’s because fewer people use it. I’m not really bothered.

Another one bites the dust:

As a result, by June 30, 2016, we will discontinue our Linux product sector and concentrate increasingly on developing Avira’s Windows and Mac OS system product portfolio only. Specifically, Avira AntiVir Professional Linux, Avira Server Security Linux and Avira Free Antivirus Linux will be discontinued and Avira Endpoint Security and Avira Business Security Suite will be offered without Linux support.

Siapa berikutnya yang akan menyusul Avira karena alasan “Linux installations have been declining steadily for years”?

Anti virus Android ternyata mudah dikelabui

Lookout Inc., a company that only does mobile protection, failed to flag every single variant of DroidDream that it was tested against – all 14 of them. Lookout was one of the first security vendors to alert the public to the existence of DroidDream, and yet they failed to stop basic variants of it that were created in the lab.

Trend Micro also had serious problems, as they failed to detect 9 out of 10 variants of the SMS Trojan, Fake Player. This is noteworthy because they discovered the first incarnation of this mobile malware in 2010

Dari postingan ReadWriteWeb yang berjudul Where Is the iPhone Malware? Lookout Releases iOS Security App:

Mobile security company Lookout has released one of the first apps dedicated to iOS. Lookout Mobile Security for iPhone was released today to match the company’s Android offerings except for one important difference – it does not detect and remove malware. The way Lookout sees it, for iOS, it does not need to.
