Hardware is dead

I had heard that tablets in China had already reached low price points. You can buy a reasonable Android phone for $100 retail, and I wanted to see if I could find a $150 tablet. This consultant pointed me to a mall filled with hundreds of stalls selling nothing but tablets. I walked into the middle of the scrum to a random stall. I pointed to one of the devices on display and asked, “How much for this one?” 300 kuai. My Mandarin is a bit rusty, so I had to ask again. Slowly, the stall owner repeated renminbi 300 yuan.

If this were a movie, the lights would have dimmed and all the activity in the room frozen. 300 renminbi is US $ 45. And that was the initial offer price given to a bewildered foreigner in China, no haggling. I felt a literal shock.

I bought the device and did some more research. This was a 7-inch tablet, Wi-Fi only with all the attributes of a good tablet. Capacitive touchscreen. Snappy processor. Front facing camera. 4GB of internal memory and an expandable memory slot.

Wow… US$45 untuk sebuah tablet. Kira-kira untungnya darimana?

Tiny, cheap, and dangerous: Inside a (fake) iPhone charger

Ken Shirriff:

It’s amazing that manufacturers can build and sell a complex charger for just a few dollars. It looks a lot like a genuine Apple charger and cost a lot less. But looking inside, I found that important safety corners were cut, which could lead to a 340 volt surprise. In addition, the interference from a cheap charger like this can cause touchscreen malfunctions. Thus, I recommend spending a few dollars more to get a brand-name charger.

My real samsung charger messes up the touchscreen to the point that I cant use drawsomething when plugged in. Not just cheap adapters do it.

Mengapa Mac lebih mahal

Mengapa komputer Mac lebih mahal…

The answer is fairly obvious to anyone coming to Macs after years of using commodity PC equipment: better design and build quality costs more. What you get is a machine whose hinges don’t begin to wobble in the first six months of use, and whose keyboard doesn’t degrade to a rickety mess of loose keys and hidden debris. I’ve owned or used at least a half-dozen Dell and Winbook laptops over the years. Each required at least one service call during its three-year life cycle, one as many as three, leaving a single piece of plastic from among the original parts. I’d bet that HP repair statistics are similar.
